Shelter Island Boat Works

As the weather has turned bitter cold I have been working in the basement shop. Thought I would make a half hull of the Herreshoff COQUINA as I didn’t make a model of it, as I usually do. It is at the same 1″ = 1′ scale as my other models. Made from mahogany with a white oak water line, it has 12 coats of gloss varnish.

After making it I am more impressed by Herreshoff’s skill. The contours are definitely “go fast,” and stunningly beautiful. Hollow bow, full-ish mid section, slightly flat bottom with a flat-ish run aft. The shear and transom are to die for.
